Speedy pasta with peas and marmite (v)

Ok, this is a cheat recipe really, and it's a variation on Nigella's marmite pasta. But it's quick and tasty...

For lne person you need:
75g pasta
1/2 cup peas
2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
1 tbsp marmite
2 spring onions, chopped
Grated Parmesan if you're not vegan.

Cook the pasta. Meanwhile melt the marmite in another pan with the onions and peas. Add some water to the pan to help loosen it. Drain the pasta and mix through the sauce. Top with parsley and cheese (if using) and scoff. Yum.

  1. doesn't this taste like pasta in gravy? Will give it a try, kids don't normally like sauce on their pasta, but marmite might help me cross that fear!

  2. Not to me, but then I don't use marmite in me gravy! Make sure you don't add too much water and it just forms a savoury sheen that clings to the pasta for added taste :)

  3. I'm making this tonight -- I have peas, and was wondering what I wanted to do with them! Marmite it is. Thanks, Becka! Weezy

  4. Ok, so here's my variant, which is basically a vegetarian version of a pasta dish I used to make fairly regularly when peas are in season, using prosciutto or the equivalent instead of the marmite.

    For me:
1 cup fresh peas (because that's what I had)
    50 grams pasta (ditto)
    1 teaspoon marmite
    1/2 tablespoon butter
    1 clove garlic
    fresh mint
    freshly ground pepper
    parmesan (some)

I more or less followed your recipe, cooking the peas for the last minute or so with the pasta instead of adding to the marmite. The only reason I used the butter was that I googled Nigella's recipe for marmite pasta, and that's what she did! Next time, I'll use olive oil instead of butter, which is more true to my original recipe.

This was GREAT. I love the combination of mint, garlic, parmesan and peas. And the marmite doesn't even taste like marmite, but gives that salty umami richness that the prosciutto used to provide. I would never, ever have thought of using marmite on pasta, so I am deeply, deeply grateful.

  5. it's all about the umami isn't it! Now I'm eating meat again I miss it less (have just scoffed a packet of chorizo...) but it does fill a veggie void!
